How could students use blogs to further their learning?

As a first grade teacher, this seems like just a crazy idea. Especially after hearing that technology does not count in Montgomery County Elementary Schools. Apparently lab time should be used for math games and typing papers rather than teaching children how to properly use a computer, how to use tools, and terminology. Needless to say, I had a few things to tell the principal, staff development teacher, and my team about that. My team was so proud of using the computer lab for games...are you serious?! My kids learn how to correctly type but they also learn what a monitor, cpu, mouse, and keyboard are. They also learn to use tools on the computer and the software.

  1. I must agree withyou Jen Blogging for preschool is a little foolish to me.but it is good for teachers TO REFLECT AND DISCUSS TOPICS.

  3. This whole experience for me has been so crazy because without technology, I would be completely cut off from the rest of the world! I can't imagine having to actually write letters to keep in contact with my family and friends from the other side of the world. What is even more crazy, is that I am subbing at an American (DoD) school where there is such a strong emphasis on technology and its importance to student learning, and I am working full time as a high school English teacher in a Japanese school where they could care less about presenting the students with even the option to use computers. Because I have the option of getting to see both sides of the spectrum, I can without a doubt say that my Japanese students would be more engaged in their learning even if a blog was the least they were given!! The benefits are countless, but most importantly if the student's are interested and involved and they are actually learning something by doing it, blog on!!
